Step 1: The space
To start, I’ll want to see the space in some capacity. To break the ice, text me a picture of the entire wall with measurements (214-755-5370). I'll ask for everything I need to entirely understand the space whether that involves a site visit or remote zoom, videos and pictures. No need to prepare.
At this stage I’m looking at the light, the viewing distance, sight lines, how you move through the space, how the light changes throughout the day, interior design needs, how the space is used…I’m quietly absorbing everything.
The Custom Commission Process
Kristi Kennimer here. Let me guide you through my process step-by-step.
Step 2: The left brain
Next, we do all the numbers: the scale, the price and the invoicing.
I'll provide scaled mockups with appropriate sizes. Each option will show the art’s measurements along with the corresponding price.
My work is priced on a formula, currently at $2.25 per square inch (+optional framing and delivery).
Once you make your selection, you will receive an invoice asking for a 50% deposit.
Step 3: The right brain
Next we’ll look through my work so you can react to any painting you like or dislike. I’ll ask easy questions in simple language. While learning what you gravitate toward, my brain is analyzing and synthesizing technical elements.
After we talk art, I’ll learn all about you through a conversational interview where my curiosity will lead us where we need to go. I want to learn about your life, what fills your time, what your passions are, your ups and your downs. You will undoubtedly spark inspiration that will guide the story of your painting.
Step 4: I paint
After we talk, it never fails- you will have inspired me. I will disappear for 15 weeks, building layers that represent the various experiences of your life. As I paint, I am thinking about you and your life and its trajectory— wondering where life will take you next and what purpose your adversities might have in store for you.
I believe your painting is an abstract representation of you. Just as a part of our childhood shapes who we are today, likewise, an early layer of paint peeks through to shape the outcome of the final composition.
Step 5: The big day
Just about the time you’re feeling like I forgot about you, my name will pop up on your phone with the news. You are welcome to see the painting, but most people choose to have the art hung in the space and be surprised.
I want you to love your painting, so if there is anything you don’t love, please don’t hesitate. I will make it right or repaint for you. I’ve been doing this a long time, and so far I think we’re doing something right.
The best part though, I think, is that you will feel something you didn’t know you were missing. Your space will add joy to your life. And you will discover fascinating details in your painting for years to come. And when you do, I would love nothing more than hear from you and know you are enjoying your special painting.
